Sitting and watching the sunset, I found myself in conversation with someone I’d just met. He asked a series of well-placed questions – not clever or leading, just questions that slowed my thinking down.
At the time, I was wrestling with a growing sense that the way I’d been approaching my future no longer made sense, even though nothing was obviously wrong.
I later learned that he was a professional coach. What stayed with me wasn’t who he was, but what the questions did: they helped me notice a shift in how I was relating to the change I was already in.
There was no dramatic breakthrough or self-help moment. Just a sense of mental ease, and a clearer understanding of the pattern I’d been repeating.
That was the point where I stopped waiting for clarity to arrive, and started acting from a truer sense of who I already was becoming.
It wasn’t dramatic. There was no HUGE ‘a-ha’ moment that has been glamourised by self help.
It was clear, clarifying and helped me see a pattern I hadn’t been able to name before.
